macOS Sierra Coming This FallAt Apple's latest annual World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) there were surprisingly no new hardware announcements made. What they did reveal was the future of their new operating system, coined as macOS Sierra.
For the last decade and a half, Apple has referred to their operating system as Mac OS X (The X is pronounced 10, not the letter X). Starting with this new version and releasing to the general public this fall, the name is now macOS.
New macOS Features
The good news: Apple has crammed a lot of really cool new features into macOS Sierra 10.12.
- Siri on macOS
- Upgraded Photo's app
- Apple Watch can unlock your Mac
- Shared clipboard from your iPhone/iPad to your Mac and back again
- iCloud Drive updates
What Macs Are Compatible With macOS?
All these changes come with a price, and that price is compatibility. If you are running an older Mac, there is a chance you will not be able to upgrade to the new OS this fall. Supported Mac computers include:
- MacBook Pro (2010 and later)
- MacBook Air (2010 and later)
- Mac Mini (2010 and later)
- Mac Pro (2010 and later)
- MacBook (Late 2009 and later)
- iMac (Late 2009 and later)
If your Mac is not on that list, you won't be able to run macOS Sierra 10.12. While a 2009 MacBook Pro is a great computer, Mac OS X 10.11 (Mavericks) is the latest OS you will be able to run on that machine.
How to Find What Model You Own
Unclear on what year your Mac was released by Apple? By clicking on About This Mac, you can find your OS version and year your Mac was released. If it's on the list above, you're all set. If it's older, it will not run macOS Sierra.
If a new Mac is just out of your budget, fear not! Ramjet has you covered! We have plenty of upgraded Macs at great prices that will allow you to run macOS Sierra. Our inventory changes often as we get new stock in, so be sure to click here to see what we have! And remember, an upgraded Mac with maxed out RAM and an SSD is a very powerful computer, and macOS Sierra will work great on it!
Memory for Mac Mini & MoreThe Mac mini is often used as a second Mac in the home, particularly for those that have a particular application in mind for this machine. We hear of users buying a Mac mini for a home theatre system since its HDMI port makes it easy to connect to your TV. The Mac mini server version is particularly useful for hosting services in your home.
2012 Mac mini
Apple has designed the 2012 Mac mini to be user-upgradable. You can install a pair of dimms in the Mac mini, either in 4GB, 8GB, or 16GB of RAM. We do not recommend that users attempt to upgrade their hard drive unless they are accustomed to tinkering. You can order a Mac mini with 500GB HDD, 1TB HDD, or you can go the route of an SSD or Fusion Drive. We don't see the point in that since the Mac mini is generally used for a more cost conscious approach.
2012 Mac mini ports
Apple made slight modifications to the ports on a 2012 Mac mini. The USB 2.0 port is now a USB 3.0 port. There is one Thunderbolt port, HDMI out, Ethernet, SDXC, and Audio In and Out. Ramjet offers some external storage options such as the 3TB Thunderbolt Drive, for example.
Activity Monitor on Your Mac MiniIf you're considering a Mac Mini RAM upgrade, here's a sure way to find out if your current system would benefit from more Apple RAM. Go to your Applications folder in your Finder and look for the Utilities folder. Inside this folder, you will find a handy application called the Activity Monitor. Double click on this application, find the System Memory option at the bottom half of the screen.
You will find terms used for Free, Wired, Active, Inactive, and Used. The pie chart provided to the right will indicate how much is allocated to each of these terms. The important one to note is Free memory. If you discover that your pie chart has less than 25% allocated to free memory, it is likely that you are due for a Apple RAM upgrade.
Pay Attention to Page Outs:
Page outs happen when your system has to write information from RAM onto your hard drive because your RAM is full. This is a sure indication that by adding more Apple memory from Ramjet, you should see a substantial increase in your system's speed and overall performance. These are some memory upgrade options for your Mac Mini machine.

If you have a Mac Mini that came with only 2 GB of RAM, you might want to add more for better performance. No need to spend a lot of money having a tech do it for you. It's a very easy process and here we'll show you how.
For this tutorial we'll be removing the two 1 GB sticks that came with our Mac Mini 2.4 GHz model, and replacing them with two 4 GB sticks for a total of 8 GB of RAM.
Note: Make sure you're grounded and not standing on carpet which can produce static when replacing the memory. If you really want to be sure, get an anti-static wrist strap. I've never used one when replacing memory in any computer and never had a problem, but it's something to consider.
1. make sure you have everything unplugged from your Mac. The keyboard, mouse, and whatever else is plugged into it…most importantly the power cord!
2. Flip the Mac Mini around so you see the cover on the bottom. If you don't want to scuff up the case, place it on a soft towel.
3. Now remove the cover by turning it counter clockwise to the unlock position. Use the circles on each side of the cover to turn it and you'll feel it come loose
4. Then just remove the cover so you can get at the memory sticks inside.
5. Just set the cover aside, and here you can see the memory sticks that came with it.
6. There are two metal clips that hold it in place. Gently move them outward toward the case so the first memory stick is loose and flips up. Then remove the sick by pulling it straight out toward the right side of the case.
7. Then place the first memory module you removed to the side out of the way. So at this point you have the first stick out, and will see the second one still inside the Mac.
8. Now take out the second memory stick the same way you took out the first, and set it aside.
9. At this point there should be no memory in the Mac Mini, and the two sticks that came with it are set aside.
10. Now bring over the new RAM sticks you purchased and take them out of their packaging.
11. Replace the new stick of RAM in the bottom slot first. Make sure the notch on the memory stick is lined up correctly. Slide it in and snap it down. Don't try to force it in, it's an easy process and the RAM should just slide into the slot easily.
12. So, now you should have the stick on the bottom replaced, and only have one more to go.
13. Slide in the second stick of RAM into the top slot.
14. Then gently push it down into place…again don't try to force them in if it's not lined up correctly. Take your time and make sure the upgrade goes successfully.
15. There you go! Now you have the two new sticks of RAM in your Mac Mini…just a few more steps and you'll be ready to experience a faster Snow Leopard experience.

16. Grab the bottom cover you set aside, line it up, and snap it back into place.
17. Your done! Flip your Mac Mini back over and hook it back up with the power cord, monitor, Keyboard and Mouse, and whatever else you had plugged into it.

18. Time to see if the new RAM works and is identified by Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Turn on the machine and after it boots up, click on the Apple icon on the Upper left corner of the screen and click About This Mac.
19. Now you should see the new amount of memory on your system where in this case we swapped out 2 GB for 8 GB.
If for some reason the old amount of RAM is showing, check out Ross's article on how to get your mac to recognize newly installed RAM.

That is all there is to it! Rather than taking your Mac Mini to the Geek Squad or an Apple Store, and paying way too much for a simple process, this guide should help you save some money by doing it yourself.
